Berlin Gazetteer of (Urban) Syria is a collection of places and experiences in Berlin city that Syrians remember or associate Syria with. Ancient Gazetteers, which are indexes to an atlas, were produced for areas as a source of information as well as local pride. This map acts as a kind of gazetteer of locations with records of stories from Syria remembered or triggered in them, overlaying across the map of Berlin, with spatial referencing to the original location of the memory back in Syria. The objective is to put into perspective the notion of trans-locality that dominates the realities of a globalised world with migration flows, economic interdependencies, and transmission of knowledge and urban. To try to capture the interconnectedness and processes that happen in and between the different localities in Syria and their new city Berlin. This directory is an open-end, non-linear process of tracing hints of Syrian (urban) culture in Berlin.
